The Earth House by Art & Architecture Associates received international recognition as a Winner at the BLT Design Awards, a global platform that celebrates excellence in architecture, interior design, and landscape design from across the world.
Located amidst the agricultural landscape near Halol, Vadodara, The Earth House explores the possibilities of sustainable rural living through climate-responsive architecture and the use of natural materials. Designed as a near net-zero residence, the project integrates passive environmental strategies with renewable energy systems to create a comfortable and environmentally responsible living environment.
One of the defining features of the house is its rammed earth construction, where soil excavated directly from the site is used to create thick earth walls with high thermal mass. These walls significantly reduce solar heat gain and maintain indoor temperatures approximately 7–10°C cooler than the outside climate, making the building highly efficient in the tropical conditions of Gujarat.
The layout of the house is organized around three bedrooms and a central living space, separated by an outdoor leisure zone with a pool and gazebo. This arrangement allows for natural cross ventilation while maintaining strong visual and spatial connections with the surrounding landscape.
Sustainability is further reinforced through passive design strategies, including optimal solar orientation, natural ventilation, and a roof designed to capture solar energy for electricity generation. The surrounding landscape plays a vital role in the environmental performance of the project. Native plantations, Miyawaki forest plantations, organic farming, and mango orchards create a biodiverse ecosystem while providing natural shading that reduces heat gain.
The project also incorporates rainwater harvesting, locally sourced materials, and environmentally responsible construction techniques, minimizing its ecological footprint while supporting a self-sufficient lifestyle.
By combining traditional construction methods with contemporary sustainable design principles, The Earth House demonstrates how architecture can respond to environmental challenges while remaining deeply rooted in its local context.
Receiving the BLT Design Awards recognition highlights the project as a significant example of sustainable residential architecture from India, showcasing how thoughtful design can create meaningful connections between architecture, climate, and landscape.
