The Green Office, designed by Architect Dharam Patel of Art & Architecture Associates, received the Winner recognition at the HELIX Design Awards 2023 for its innovative and sustainable approach to workplace interior design.
Located on the top floor of a glazed commercial building in Vadodara, the office addresses the environmental challenge of a south-west facing façade exposed to intense solar heat gain. The design transforms the workspace into a comfortable and climate-responsive environment through the strategic integration of green screens and indoor planting systems.
More than 1100 indoor plants have been incorporated across the workspace to create living green walls that act as natural sun filters. These green screens significantly reduce solar radiation entering the interior while cooling the space through natural transpiration, improving thermal comfort and reducing dependency on artificial cooling systems.
The interior design language reflects the core identity of the client’s work with quarry stones. Natural stone surfaces are used across the office interiors to create a strong visual character that communicates the nature of the business to visitors. This raw material palette is balanced by lush green walls and indoor landscape elements that soften the rigid textures of stone.
An open-plan layout with low-height partitions enhances spatial openness and visual connectivity across the workspace, encouraging collaboration and transparency among employees. The director cabins are positioned at the far end of the office, framed with green walls that provide both privacy and a calming natural backdrop.
By combining natural materials, indoor landscaping, and passive environmental strategies, the project creates a sustainable and inspiring workspace. The Green Office demonstrates how thoughtful interior design can effectively respond to environmental challenges while strengthening the identity and functionality of the workplace.
Receiving the HELIX Design Awards 2023 highlights the project as a notable example of innovative and environmentally responsive office design from India.
