The Earth House, designed by Architect Dharam Patel of Art & Architecture Associates, received the Bronze Winner recognition at the IFI Design Awards 2024 held in New York. The IFI Design Awards celebrate global excellence in architecture and design, recognizing projects that demonstrate innovation, sustainability, and meaningful contributions to the built environment.
Located amidst agricultural farmland near Halol, Vadodara, The Earth House explores the possibilities of climate-responsive architecture and sustainable rural living. The project demonstrates how traditional building methods can be combined with contemporary design strategies to create a comfortable, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsible residence.
A defining feature of the house is its rammed earth construction, where soil excavated directly from the site was used to build thick earth walls. These walls provide high thermal mass, significantly reducing solar heat gain and maintaining interior temperatures approximately 7β10Β°C cooler than the outside environment, making the house well-suited to the tropical climate of Gujarat.
The layout of the residence is organized around three bedrooms and a central living space, separated by an outdoor leisure zone featuring a pool and gazebo. This spatial arrangement encourages natural ventilation while maintaining strong connections with the surrounding landscape.
Sustainability is further reinforced through passive design strategies, solar energy generation, rainwater harvesting, and the use of locally sourced natural materials. The landscape integrates native plantations, Miyawaki forest, organic farming, and mango orchards, creating a biodiverse environment that supports ecological balance and self-sufficient living.
Winning the Bronze Award at the IFI Design Awards 2024 highlights the project as a notable example of sustainable residential architecture from India, demonstrating how architecture can address climate challenges while creating a harmonious relationship between the built environment and nature.
