The Earth House, designed by Architect Dharam Patel of Art & Architecture Associates, received the Winner recognition at the ACES of Space Awards 2023 held in Mumbai. The award celebrates excellence in architecture and design, recognizing projects that demonstrate innovation, sustainability, and thoughtful spatial planning.

Located within agricultural farmland near Halol, Vadodara, the Earth House represents a contemporary interpretation of climate-responsive and sustainable rural architecture. The project explores the potential of rammed earth construction combined with passive environmental strategies to create a near net-zero residence that harmonizes with its natural surroundings.

The house is constructed using thick rammed earth walls made from soil excavated directly from the site, creating a building envelope with high thermal mass. This helps regulate indoor temperatures and significantly reduces solar heat gain, maintaining interiors approximately 7–10°C cooler than the external tropical climate of Gujarat.

The layout of the residence is organized around three bedrooms and a central living space, separated by an outdoor leisure zone featuring a pool and gazebo. This spatial arrangement promotes natural ventilation while creating strong visual connections with the surrounding landscape.

Sustainability is further reinforced through passive design strategies such as optimal solar orientation, natural daylighting, and renewable energy generation through solar panels. The landscape design integrates native plantations, Miyawaki forest, organic farming, and mango orchards, creating a biodiverse environment that enhances natural cooling and reduces irrigation demands.

By combining traditional building techniques with contemporary sustainable design principles, the Earth House demonstrates how architecture can respond effectively to environmental challenges while maintaining comfort, simplicity, and a deep connection with nature.

Winning the ACES of Space Awards 2023 highlights the project as a notable example of sustainable residential architecture in India, showcasing how thoughtful design can integrate ecological responsibility with modern living.
